The outcome of the Safeway battle could be decided as early as next week with the government considering making an early announcement on the takeover.
It was assumed that the announcement would be made after the Labour Party Conference at the beginning of October. However, sources close to Safeway have been told to be ready for next week.
The Safeway report is widely believed to recommend that Morrison's be allowed to bid with the disposal of about 50 stores. It's bigger rivals; Wal-Mart, Tesco and Sainsbury's are all thought to have lost out.
