The South African grape season has entered its final phase, with packing now focused solely on the Hex River Valley.

“The current inspected volume [from the area] stands at 8.896 million cartons, compared to 10.919m carton equivalents last season,” said South African Table Grape Industry’s Elaine Alexander of the figures to the end of February.

She reported that producers are well underway with their harvest of Crimson Seedless, with Barlinka and Dauphine due to start shortly. Pre-season volume estimates for the region should be reached by the third week of April.

Meanwhile, packouts from the Northern Province and the Orange River have both closed the season down on last year’s volumes - 1m equivalent cartons lower in the Northern Province at 2.955m cartons, and 800,000 cartons lower at 14.658m from Orange River. The Berg River is likely to close the season five per cent down in volume terms on last year.
