Vales Sovereign

Greenvale AP launched a new maincrop potato variety exclusively with Tesco this week.

Vales Sovereign, which has taken 12 years to bring to market, was bred by the Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI) and has been undergoing market trials for the past two seasons.

The nationwide potato supplier has 2,500 acres under production in East Anglia, Herefordshire, Shropshire and the borders of Scotland.

Greenvale AP describes Vales Sovereign as a “modern take on classic King Edward”, hence the royal reference in its name. It has a large, oval shape and a blushed skin. Like King Edward, it is very versatile.

Greenvale AP business development manager Paul Edwards said: “Many of the all-rounder potato varieties currently on the market tend to have a rather floury texture. We have bred Vales Sovereign to combine the best of British - the texture and creamy flavour.”

Breeders at SCRI developed the new potato to have a lower water requirement and need only 50 per cent of the nitrogen fertiliser that other commercial varieties require.

Vales Sovereign is available in 1kg and 2kg packs from Tesco nation-wide.
