This is because researchers have tricked the flowers into blooming at any time of year.

Scientists in California have created a machine that helps plants to track the seasons. It does this with two different sets of protein to enable scientists to tinker with the flower's workings and create a year-round supply.

Dr Marcelo Yanovsky of Scripps Research Institute said: 'We have demonstrated for the first time how plants can anticipate the seasons so they can flower appropriately.'
