The National Recycling Awards - the only gala event recognising and rewarding excellence in the waste and recycling community - has introduced a new category aimed at the UK's greenest high street retailers.

Best High Street Recycler is open to any business that operates on a traditional high street or within a shopping mall, such as retailers, pubs and bars and restaurants. Individual outlets (including independents and single outlets within chains) as well as UK-wide businesses will be eligible to enter.

Supermarkets are invited to enter a separate category - Baylis Award for Best Supermarket Recycler - which was won last year by WM Morrison Supermarkets for the "Recyclopedia" labelling system it developed for its own brand packaging.

Full entry guidelines can be found on www.nationalrecyclingawards.com and the closing date for entries is August 22.

The entries will be judged in September by a panel of industry professionals chaired by Paul Sanderson and the winners will be presented with their awards at a celebrity-hosted black-tie gala event at the Telford International Centre on November 12.

Sanderson said: "Retailers have a major role to play in reducing landfilled waste and helping their customers to make green choices. With the likes of Boots, Argos, the Early Learning Centre, John Lewis, Mothercare, Next and The Body Shop recently signing up to an industry-wide set of environmental pledges, we are looking forward to a hard fought competition for this new category."
