Road trip through America’s heart

Two years ago I was fortunate enough to travel across America, from the East Coast to the West Coast via Utah and Nevada.

For those who have never crossed the Atlantic, America is still very familiar thanks to the images from its prolific television and film industry.

However, only when you are driving through its landscape do you fully appreciate how vast this nation is. One can drive for six hours and still not have crossed a state line. Therefore, when American farmers and producers have the task of feeding this country I’m amazed that any produce makes it out of the USA.

Thankfully, we are the beneficiaries of many regular exports including sweet potatoes, watermelon and sweet cherries. The UK government speaks of our special relationship with America, and long may it continue, especially if it means more deliveries of Florida grapefruit. Of course, we are also fortunate to have forged strong relationships with our European cousins and thanks to these bonds we will not go short of French apples this season.

The French, along with many other Europeans, have shared our misery over the devastating weather conditions and although prices are inevitably higher than last year, retailers can count on filling their shelves with the best pommes France has to offer.
