While I was certainly no stranger to writing this column in my former life as deputy editor, this time around it feels somewhat different. As you will no doubt have read in Tommy’s leader last week, this is my first official issue as editor of FPJ.

I am sure you will all agree with me that Tommy has left some pretty cavernous boots to fill. This publication has gone from strength to strength since he took the helm in 1998 and I find myself picking up the reins of a journal that is unrivalled - in my humble opinion, although I am biased, of course - and hugely respected throughout the industry. I am eager to cement our already well-established reputation even further and am looking forward to the chance to work with you all in the years to come.

The government has now unveiled its biggest crackdown to date on the spiralling obesity epidemic in the UK with the Change4Life coalition. Although the move is, on the face of it, a highly positive one, I cannot help wondering if it is just another example of politicians wrapping a policy up in buzzwords and spin in an attempt to grab a few column inches. Let’s hope it actually does effect real change.

It is certainly heartening to see the retailers already getting on board the initiative with a series of price pledges on healthy food - although, as ever, it is imperative that these cuts are not at the expense of suppliers.
