Plenty to smile about: Ripesense director Tony Sayle

Ripesense, the revolutionary New Zealand designed label that changes colour depending on the maturity of the fruit it is attached to, caused quite a stir in Berlin.

Already being used in the UK, by Sainsbury’s on its pears, the product was being showcased for the first time at Fruit Logistica. Director Tony Sayle told freshinfo there had been “unprecedented interest” in the ripesense product from visitors. “Suppliers to supermarkets have got to such a stage now that the question they are asking themselves is what else can we do to enhance the quality and performance of the product for the end consumer?” he said.

“Part of the interest in ripesense of course is that it’s new. Ripesense has proved itself on pears but the great thing is that we don’t yet know the full extent of the application of the current sensor. We believe it is applicable to any product and the retailers globally say they want it. We have something that can add excitement to any fruit category and to have a sutainable category that provides consistent margins, it is vital that consumers are eating consistent product.

“Judging by the reaction here, it is a case of where to now?” Sayle concluded.
