Smart label manufacturer Ripesense is celebrating after being one of the products to be nominated for the Fruit Logistica Innovation Award 2006.
The company’s labels, which allow consumers to clearly see the ripeness level of pears, has already been voted by Time magazine as one of the world’s greatest inventions in 2004.
The Ripesense indicator changes colour, from red to show the pear is crisp, through to orange for firm and finally yellow to show the fruit is juicy.
The company said it is now working on adapting the technology to be used on other fruit, such as avocado, melon, stone fruit and kiwifruit.
