Rijk Zwaan is leading the way for the future of lettuce products with two products, Salatrio and Salanova. The pair were nominated at the AGF show in the fruit and vegetables innovation award.

Maurice Wubben, public relations, said: “Salatrio enables three types of lettuce to grow together, this enables different tastes from one lettuce. It has proved a great success in the Netherlands where two supermarkets have taken it on and we are now looking at getting it into the UK. We're hopeful this will appeal to the young market.”

The company likes to take its time in getting things right. Salanova has been 12 years in the making. The product is easy to prepare as it separates into individual leaves with just one cut of a knife and it aims to compete in the supermarkets with pre-cut lettuce.
