Plant breeder Rijk Zwaan has kicked off 2011 by initiating plantings its new tomato demonstration nursery in Kwintsheul, The Netherlands.

The new demo glasshouse was built by Leo van Meurs. The experienced tomato grower has taken over the baton from Harry Augustijn, who has managed the Rijk Zwaan tomato demo glasshouse in Steenbergen for the past seven years. Rijk Zwaan is leasing the glasshouse in Kwintsheul in the coming years as a demonstration nursery with a cropping area of 1ha.

The Kwintsheul facility benefits from a host of modern features which Rijk Zwaan believes makes it an ideal demonstration location. Van Meurs said: “Despite all the rain in August and September and the early onset of winter we were able to adhere quite well to the original building schedule.

Due to the cold weather we have had to postpone planting by a few days, but the plant material looks perfect now. No wonder, then, that we are starting this first season with a very satisfied feeling.”
