Rhubarb rained off

Torrential rain earlier this week is causing further disruption to the forced rhubarb season in Yorkshire. “We had so much rain, the gauge just overflowed,” said Janet Oldroyd Hulme of E Oldroyd & Son. “Those growers that are still waiting to fill their sheds will not be able to get their roots out.”

Several inches of rain fell in a very short time on Monday, leaving growers concerned that their sheds could flood if more rain comes and that rhubarb quality could be affected, especially as temperatures are mild.

“If producers get too much rapid growth now, they could end up with brittle, white rhubarb,” said Oldroyd Hulme. “They have to turn their sheds down and not force the growth. We are just hoping that no more rain is forecast.”
