Yorkshire rhubarb could be in line to receive a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) accolade under the EU’s protected food name scheme.

On behalf of Defra, export marketing consultancy Food from Britain has put forward an application for a PDO for Traditionally Grown Yorkshire Rhubarb, under which only vegetables grown to an exacting list of specifications would be marketed.

Before a decision on whether to forward the application to the European Commission for the next stage in the process can be made, in compliance with article 5.5 of the Council regulation (EC) 510/2006, interested parties in the UK have been presented with an opportunity to comment or object to the application.
