A new rhubarb growers’ group has been established to help influence research priorities for the category ahead of several HDC-funded rhubarb grower events.

All commercial rhubarb growers are being urged to join the new group, which is being chaired by Barfoots of Botley farm manager Neil Cairns.

“Collaboration on new research required by this sector is necessary to ensure that our Horticultural Development Company (HDC) levy is spent on projects required by commercial growers,” said Cairns.

Relevant research and knowledge exchange are vital to the future of this expanding sector, he added.

The news comes ahead of a rhubarb grower meeting on 7 May, in Yorkshire, to view a HDC-funded herbicide trial.

A meeting with the HDC will also be organised to discuss future research priorities for the sector, including the potential for additional crop protection products.

British Growers Association (BGA), which already provides the administration for 14 crop associations, is establishing the new group in conjunction with the HDC.

Any rhubarb growers interested in joining the group, or attending the upcoming meeting in May, should contact Jayne.Dyas@britishgrowers.org or 01507 602427.
