Sainsbury’s is trialling new packaging that could save the retailer up to three-quarters of its costs and reduce excess packaging considerably.

The new ‘i-lid’ from packaging specialist Herma uses a cold seal, as opposed to the usual practice of hot sealing, to combine the lid with a fully-printed label.

The new technique, using an applicator produced by the German company, costs around £18,000 compared to the standard cost of around £80,000.

It is being trialled by suppliers to Sainsbury’s at the moment.

Scott Bower, area sales manager for Herma UK, told freshinfo: “Supermarkets are being pressured by the consumer all the time to reduce packaging and keep costs down so anything that supermarkets can do to reduce cost pleases the consumer - as long as they don’t have to pay.”
