The FPC is urging retailers to sign up to the Healthy Start Scheme set to be rolled out nationwide next year.

According to the Consortium, the voucher scheme designed to set pregnant women and young children in low-income families on the way to 5 A DAY, represents a good opportunity for retailers.

The scheme, which was launched in Devon and Cornwall in November, provides vouchers that can be used in full or part payment for fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, as well as milk or infant formula milk.

Participating retailers will be paid the full face value of each voucher - £2.80 -normally within 14 days of the Healthy Start Reimbursement Unit receiving the claim.

To become involved with the scheme, retailers must complete an application form and return it to the HSRU.
