Most fruit growers agree that cherries are the ultimate impulse buy, and Tesco has obviously been listening. The fruit is no longer sold in punnets and last year it introduced a sealed bowl to stop finger blight on the shelves.

This year it has gone a stage further, following easy peelers with a new stylised, lithographed 1kg mock-up pack reminiscent of the old style pegged Dutch trays for £5. It has even added in some leaves, which seems to be all the rage.

Sourced in Spain and holding the Sommerset variety, it will be interesting to see if it catches on elsewhere.

At Marks & Spencer, could it be that the famous Jersey Royal has a long-term competitor?

Under its Latest Discovery, limited edition speciality potato range, it has come up with a variety called Bonnotte at £1.99 for 500g. It features the information that it is the first new potato to be exported from the island for 126 years.

Those in the trade with long memories would challenge this claim, as in the sixties there was approval from the Jersey parliament to expand the range with Red Craigs Royal and Sceptre, although it did not last for long.

Another more recent reputation has been carved out by Pink Lady, although consumers probably do not realise that it is a brand rather than an apple variety.

Sold as Cripps Pink, and sourced in Chile, they are identified as such at Lidl with a 1kg polybag priced at £1.99.

Providing information on taste on the pack is particularly appropriate when it comes to chillies, because of the shapes, colours and strengths. Sainsbury’s has taken this into account with a new 75g British mixed variety pack for £1.

To make doubly sure they list Bishop’s Hat and Scotch Bonnet as very hot, finger chillies as hot, and Jalapeño and Hungarian Hot Wax as medium, together with an artist’s impression.

Soft-fruit sales are still humming, and while other retailers are linking cream to strawberries, it also has a special offer on 400g of English Sonata at Sainsbury’s, reduced from £4 to £2, with 150ml of cream now being given away free.
