The monthly publication shows that total retail sales in June showed growth of four per cent on a like for like basis and 6.9 per cent compared to a year earlier, although the three-month growth trend did experience a fall in June.

Food and drink saw impressive sales growth in Golden Jubilee week and some London stores in particular posted strong figures.

Sales slowed in the period immediately following the royal celebration, but have been broadly in line with analysts expectations at most supermarkets.

Cooler wet weather is reported to have exerted downward pressure on certain seasonal lines, although the main victims have been ice cream and barbecue products as opposed to any specific fresh produce lines.

And the World Cup boosted some food and drink sales – namely beer – but purchases of other lines slowed very slightly.
