Sunny days in May enhanced sales in a variety of sectors including fresh fruit and vegetables. Acting head of retail at KPMG said: “A like-for-like sales increase of 3.7 per cent over May 2003 represents a strong improvement over the previous couple of months, albeit on the back of weak figures this time last year.”

However, BRC director general Kevin Hawkins said the figures are misleadingly strong and makes things “especially susceptible to any further interest rate rises - something the Monetary Policy Committee needs to take into consideration ahead of its meeting this week.”

Food and drink displayed good growth particularly in fresh fruit and vegetables, salads and convenience foods. The May 2004 survey includes the four weeks from May 2 to 29.
