Morrisons is the only one of the big four retailers to grow ahead of the market in the last quarter, latest Kantar Worldpanel figures reveal.

The data published this week for the 12 weeks to 10 Jul show that Morrisons has grown by 5.6 per cent compared to 4.6 per cent overall growth in the marketplace.

Meanwhile the trend of two nations continued this period with Waitrose posting nine per cent growth and Aldi and Lidl 20.2 per cent and 15.6 per each. These two retailers represent 6.1 per cent of the market compared to 5.3 per cent last year while Waitrose’s share has climbed from 4.1 per cent a year ago to 4.3 per cent.

Kantar Worldpanel director Martin Whittingham said: “The increasing polarisation of the grocery market looks set to stay as consumers turn to the discounters to cut their budgets while others continue to spend in Waitrose. This divergence seems to be reflective of some contrasting lifestyles in the UK at the moment.”
