August retail sales for the grocery sector were down 65 per cent compared to 2003, according to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI). Grocers were the only sector not to achieve sales growth in August, although retail sales on the whole experienced a slowdown.

Wholesalers also experienced a faster slowdown than had been anticipated, although here, food and drink sales grew by 50 per cent compared to last year, a large increase, although down slightly on the previous four months.
