Redbridge seedless lemon exclusivity

The seedless lemons

Redbridge Worldfresh has secured exclusive supply of seedless lemons outside the major multiples following a successful trial in the UK retail market last year.

The fruit, sourced from Sundays River Citrus Company (SRCC) in South Africa, is available to Redbridge Worldfresh customers from mid-June until November. The season will start again in April 2010.

Developed by the Agricultural Research Council Institute for Tropical & Subtropical Crops in South Africa, seedless Eureka is now marketed under the trade name Seedless Eureka SL® and was widely recognised as the world’s first truly seedless lemon variety when it appeared on the market in 2004.

Redbridge Worldfresh believes the fruit has excellent potential in the foodservice industry and is a covenient alternative to conventional lemons.

Morgan Barrett, product manager at Redbridge Worldfresh, said: “Redbridge enjoys a fantastic relationship with SRCC. It’s a privilege working with such a respected supplier and great to be able to offer good, consistent quality lemons week in and week out for more than six months of the year. Sundays lemons have always had a great reputation with customers and now we can offer the new seedless variety, it’s just got even better.”

The importer took delivery of the first few pallets of the season last week and is waiting to gauge the popularity of the product outside the supermarket sector by the number of repeat orders. Barrett said: “Until you get repeat orders, it is hard to judge the reaction of the market to a product. Sundays is already one of the best appreciated brands in the market and we are hoping to get a 10 per cent premium on top for Eureka SL.”
