Bakkavör and The Watercress Company (TWC) have teamed up to apply Plant Breeders Rights (PBR) to a red watercress variety named Old Flame.

TWC managing director Tom Amery said the approval secures future investment in the product and “the PBR status is very comprehensive and prevents unlicensed propagation, reproduction or marketing”.

He added: “We are incredibly excited and proud of this product and our customers seem to agree. With sales already strong, interest is growing and our product is currently available in Waitrose watercress, spinach and rocket salad and has also been used in some prepared salad lines within Tesco stores.”

Red watercress has also been featured on a number of celebrity cookery shows from BBC One’s Saturday Kitchen through to the BBC’s Grow Your Own Drugs series.

Most recently, Raymond Blanc’s Kitchen Secrets featured the product on BBC2 and the chef has already requested this unique product for his Le Manoir kitchen.
