Assured Food Standards (AFS), the company that operates the Red Tractor scheme, is seeking to appoint a new chairman.

The woman or man selected for the role will replace David Gregory, who will be standing down later this year having completed the maximum six years’ service allowed.

AFS is an independent body owned by the food chain and is responsible for managing and promoting the Red Tractor assurance scheme and logo.

An AFS spokesperson said: 'This is regarded as a key industry role that will require strong leadership at a crucial time of change and opportunity for AFS and the industry.

'The new chairman will be required from the end of September 2015 for 50 days a year. The right candidate will have experience of accountability at board and chair level and a good knowledge of the food supply chain, while being independent of major AFS stakeholders.'

During his time at AFS,Gregory has steered the organisation through a period of substantial growth with the Red Tractor logo now appearing on over £11 billion worth of products, a rise of about 40 per cent during the six-year term.

Meurig Raymond, president of the National Farmers’ Union (NFU), said: “The chairmanship of AFS is a key role, and I want to thank David Gregory for leading the company forward, securing its financial position and ensuring synergy between all the sectors involved in Red Tractor.

'Consumers clearly wish to buy British produce of the highest standard and we therefore need someone of equal calibre going forward to further grow and develop Red Tractor as a leading brand, demonstrating British food produced to the highest standards.”

Interested candidates will preferably have board-level experience in the food supply chain, independent of any current vested interest in a particular sector, and should contact AFS on 01932 589 800 or email viv.twiselton@redtractor.org.uk or visit this link for details.
