The relaunch of the Red Tractor logo earlier this year has pushed sales forward

The retail value of food carrying the Red Tractor logo has passed the £5 billion mark.

From March to July 2005, the number of assured products displaying the Red Tractor logo increased by 14 per cent and this number is expected to continue to grow as new product packaging designs appear on the shelves of major retailers.

The fresh produce sector saw an increase of 15 per cent, and, allowing for seasonal influences, Assured Food Standards is confident it will show further increases in coming months.

The largest increase came from the dairy sector, which grew by 17 per cent in the three months, and the red meat sector also grew, by 12 per cent.

Colin Smith, chairman of AFS, said, "Since launching the new Red Tractor logo this year we have been delighted with the take up from all sectors of food production. Confidence in assured British food is gaining momentum at all levels and I'm delighted that AFS is helping to deliver these standards. We owe much of this growth to the backing of leading retailers, many of whom are actively using the Red Tractor logo as part of their in-store promotions and advertising campaigns."
