A record week for fruit imports has been recorded at Portsmouth International Port.

MMD, the fruit handling and distribution company that operates in the port, said just under 19,000 pallets of produce passed through the port in the week beginning 7 April. Portsmouth currently handles 70% of all bananas eaten in the UK.

Martin Putman, manager of Portsmouth International Port, said “We’ve never seen seven days like it. The delayed arrival of Timor Stream meant the team had their busiest week on record. I’m proud to say they rose to the challenge, a sign that as we continue to invest in new facilities increased amounts of fresh produce can be handled with ease.”

Earlier this year a brand new specialist fruit warehouse was opened at Portsmouth International Port. Work has also just started on the refurbishment of existing warehouses at MMD, with over 150 sq metres of previously open storage being turned into refrigerated warehousing, with a capacity for an extra 500 pallets.

The work is expected to be finished in time for the new NYK Laucool service starting on the 1 July.
