A record number of exhibitors and visitors from abroad flocked to Italian trade show Macfrut, in Cesena, last week.

More than 23 per cent of visitors came from more 80 countries - up from seven per cent in 2006 - and non-Italian exhibitors reached 19 per cent.

Some 21,000 people came to the event.

The three-day show, which was billed as a meeting point for the Mediterranean and beyond, opened its doors on April 26.

Around 250 bilateral meetings between exhibiting Italian companies and foreign companies represented by delegations from 16 countries, including Argentina, Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Morocco, Poland, Russia, Tunisia and Turkey, also took place in Cesena.

The opening ceremony, which was attended by the Croatian Minister of Agriculture Petar Cobankovic, who toured the 30,000 square metre exhibition venue with his Italian counterpart Paolo De Castro, aimed to reinforce the international outlook, according to organisers of the show.

The annual exhibition has been running for 24 years.
