Raspberry supplies ran short this week, sending prices rocketing as inclement Spanish weather combined with global market issues.

Importers are sourcing from Morocco, South Africa and Spain in limited volumes and prices on the wholesale markets across the UK have risen. South African fruit on Cardiff market made 200p for 125g, while the same weight of Spanish product made 220p and 250p on Western International and New Spitalfields markets respectively.

Nick Marston, managing director of marketing desk Berry Gardens, told freshinfo: “Spanish production has been reduced anyway and they have been affected by heavy frost in December for the second year running.

“The German retailers buy and market a lot of raspberries in early spring. There had been more fruit expected from Morocco, but production has decreased significantly.”

Marston expects volumes from Spain to increase modestly in March and early April.
