Raspberry offer outstrips demand

Raspberries have had a challenging marketing season, according to KG Fruits md Nicholas Marston, speaking at Fruit Focus 2006 this week. He said: “After a slow start, with sales not building as fast as predicted, we are now selling a substantial proportion of the available volumes, but sales are still lagging a little behind availability. We expect to have sold around 1,652t of raspberries by the end of the maincrop period.”

But in spite of the bigger volume of fruit being sold, the average prices for the season up to July 22 show a slight increase year on year from 612p a kilo in 2005 to 653p a kilo this year - a rise of 6.7 per cent.

He also said that KG is delighted with its Driscoll primocane varieties and that now that growers have learnt to grow these types, KG will scale up production this autumn . “The primocane reaspberry production area within KG has grown by a massive 43 per cent over the past 12 months,” said Davison. “We have successfully built the autumn raspberry market with imports from our US partners and now we are able to substitute this with home-grown fruit which is excellent news for our growers.”
