Raspberries hit hardest

Raspberries have been the worst hit of all soft fruit in Spain following recent frosts and low temperatures.

Fruit is still being harvested but in drastically reduced volumes and limited supplies from Chile are being air-freighted in to meet programmes. Fruit was in full production in the early area of Almonte in Huelva when frost struck and heavy quantities were lost.

Ian Waller of The Summerfruit Company said: “Prices are stronger this year as a result and we are expecting an increase in availability next week, but there is nowhere near enough fruit to meet demand.

“We do not expect to get back to our programmed quantities until the end of March. It will be a hand to mouth situation for several weeks ahead.”
