Ramsay worships at Mayan temple

Greenvale AP has launched Mayan Gold, the first commercial Peruvian potato to be nationally listed in the UK into the market.

The variety is one of several chosen by Greenvale from the Phureja family of potatoes brought into the UK by the Scottish Crop Research Institute, as part of the Commonwealth breeding programme.

Grown in the UK as it is the most suitable Phureja for the northern hemisphere climate, the variety has grown well, producing good looking tubers with nice flesh colours and decent yields.

Alan Owens, Greenvale chief executive, said: “The quality of Mayan Gold has been proved in taste tests and Mayan Gold is already proving to be a popular variety in many restaurants. You can’t kid the public and good varieties don’t need to be given away.”

Now widely available, Mayan Gold is already proving popular in the foodservice sector, and has caught the attention of TV celebrity chefs, with some, including Gordon Ramsay, reportedly adding them to the menus in their own restaurants. Many establishments are also using it for chips and roasts as the outside cooks to a rich golden colour whilst the inside remains light and fluffy.

Mayan Gold has a golden-coloured flesh with a nutty flavour, giving it a very creamy and dry texture. Best cooked in its skin, it is also suitable for mash and crisps where its colour and taste are said to come to the fore.
