Chelan cherries could fall

Northwest cherry growers in the US are worried bad weather could affect the first harvest of Chelans.

Low temperatures and rain are expected throughout June in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.

A Northwest Cherries representative said: “We had light rains in the production districts last week. It is important to note that we are only worried about the Chelan variety right now as the Bing crop and other late varieties are not far enough along to be affected by the rain.”

Northwest Cherries said that despite around 10 per cent of damage to crops, it still expects the region to produce over 21 million boxes (20 lb per box) of Chelans this year.
