Robert Mitchell MBE

Kent top-fruit grower and former Concordia chairman Robert Mitchell has been awarded an MBE for services to young people in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2011.

Mitchell joined the board of Concordia in 1992, and was chairman for 14 years, before retiring from the board in May 2010. During his time as chairman, the charity developed and expanded into a provider of organised practical work experience with associated learning and education programmes and established a new volunteer programme. More than 10,000 young people a year now benefit from participating in Concordia’s programmes.

Mitchell said: “It is a great honour and totally unexpected. It is nice that the work of Concordia has been recognised.”

Mitchell will be discussing seasonal labour at the FPC Conferences event in Maidstone, Kent on Thursday 23 June.

Concordia CEO Rob Orme said: “I am delighted that Robert has been awarded this honour. While Robert was Chairman the lives and careers of students from overseas and the UK have been greatly influenced through their participation in Concordia programmes many of which have emanated from the involvement and participation of Robert as chairman of the Board. For the young people that participate, it is a mind broadening and developmental experience and many return to their home country as ambassadors’ for the UK.”
