Thai exporter River Kwai, already a supplier of ready-to-cook, fresh and organic products to Tesco and Sainsbury's, believes Thailand can build on its natural advantages to expand its business in Europe.

The company's vice presidemt Soonthorn Sritawee said ready-to-cook is a key growth area in the UK and as well as developing his Thai grower base, he is also looking to extend his supplier links to China and Sri Lanka. "Due to our geographical position and the technical expertise we can provide having worked extensively in the UK, and being certified for EurepGAP, HACCP, EFSIS and by the Soil Association, we have a lot to offer Chinese and Sri Lankan growers," he said at last week's AGF Totaal. "Working with our partner in the UK - W Bailey - we see a lot of potential."

The environment and climatic conditions in Thailand also facilitate organic production, he said. "We are mainly growing crops that are easy to produce in Thailand and babycorn for instance can be grown without the need for spraying, so organic production is a natural progression."
