Promo boost for conifers

Conifer growers will receive a promotional boost in autumn with this year’s National Conifer Week.

Over 2000 retailers will be taking part this year between September 29 and October 7 in a bid to improve sales of conifers and educate the public about the plants.

Consumers will be offered advice on conifers for containers, hedging and bedding, supporting by banners promoting the plants.

Conifer growers have expressed frustration in recent times that the plants are being portrayed in a negative light and as an unfashionable purchase, and National Conifer Week hopes to go some way to correct that image, as well as dispelling the notion that conifers are only huge hedges or Christmas trees.

Instead it will look to highlight conifers’ year round contrasting colour, versatility and structure.

Meanwhile retailers who registered with the HTA for National Conifer Week 2006 will also be automatically receiving a free promotional banner to support point of sale displays and can purchase copies of the HTA Easy Guide to Growing Conifers. The is also available for sale, focusing on the trimming and shaping of conifers, aimed at both the retailer and their customers.

“British gardeners spend more than £20 million on conifers every year. National Conifer Week is an ideal time for retailers to educate their customers upon the different varieties available and what themes they can create within the garden, as well as raising the profile and appeal of conifers” says Jonathan Tate, chairman of the Association of British Conifer Growers.

In a bid to raise the profile of the plants further, a PR agency has been appointed to run the campaign and ensure maximum publicity.
