Meurig Raymond is the favourite to win NFU president

No fruit or vegetable growers have been nominated for the top three positions at the upcoming NFU elections, the union has announced.

Going head to head for the top spot of NFU president is Meurig Raymond and livestock farmer Adam Quinney.

Raymond, who farms 250 acres of potatoes on his 2,900 acre farm in Pembrokeshire as well as various livestock, is the closest of any of the candidates to being a grower.

Nominations for deputy president include Minette Batters, Thomas Binns, David Brookes, Rosey Dunn and Quinney again.

Batters, Binns, Brookes and Dunn are also among the vice president hopefuls, as well as Robert Lasseter, Jonathan Brant and Guy Smith.

The majority of candidates are livestock farmers, with the remainder from the dairy or arable sectors.

Nominations for the three positions closed on Wednesday, 15 January.

Hustings will be held in the week commencing 27 January and the elections will take place on the second day of the NFU 2014 annual conference, in Birmingham, on 26 February.

The results will be decided by an NFU council vote, made up of around 80 delegates from the counties of England and Wales.

Votes are weighted to reflect the share of member subscriptions between the counties.
