First it was the children, now inmates dinners are under the spotlight, with inspectors discovering Scottish prisoners are missing out on fresh fruit and vegetables.

Catering staff at the Shotts Prison, in Lanarkshire, said it was impossible to provide inmates with three pieces of fresh fruit a week while staying within a daily budget of £1.57.

Scotland's Chief Inspector of Prisons, Dr Andrew McLellan, noted the figure had not changed for eight years.

A report into the prison criticized the food on offer, and said an earlier recommendation for more fresh fruit had not been achieved.

It also noted that a previous recommendation to improve the quality of food had only been partly achieved.

An inspector said: "A number of the recommendations made in last year's report have been achieved, but an exception is the quality of food.

“No progress has been made in increasing the amount of fresh fruit and vegetables included in prisoners' meals.”
