The Prison Service in England and Wales is about to tender its requirement for fruit and vegetables, which has an estimated annual value of £10 million.

The new contract will be for three years and begins in June 2004.

The requirement is for a range of fruit, vegetables and salads and will include bulk produce for processing as well as prepared processed produce.

There are 128 establishments in England and Wales currently holding 74,000 prisoners. The Service is keen to investigate all potential supply chain solutions and is looking to receive expressions of interest from any potential suppliers [including national and smaller regional suppliers] wishing to supply all or part of the Services' requirement.

An advert has been placed in the supplement to the Official Journal of the European Union, reference number 03/S 198-178362/EN, (http://ted.publications.eu.int).

The deadline for expressions of interest is November 17. Information can also be obtained from Martin Shaw, tel 01536 274690, email martin.shaw@hmps.gsi.gov.uk.
