The Grow Your Own Potatoes project has received the Royal Seal of Approval at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

HRH the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall visited the stand and were informed of the project’s success in educating young children about how food is grown.

This is the second year in which the potato-growing scheme has been backed by Peter Seabrook of The Sun, making it one of the biggest projects of its kind in the country.

Currently, 12,500 primary schools - the equivalent of 375,000 children - are taking part and are now getting ready to officially harvest their crops, which they have been nurturing since March.

Schools will be attending local harvesting events and inviting growers into their classrooms to help turn out their grow bags and bring the project to its exciting conclusion on June 23.

Tracy Coult, Grow Your Own Potatoes project manager, said: “The project has thrived thanks to continued industry support and this year is no different. Whether it’s simply lending a hand to weigh the potatoes or giving a small talk or presentation, help from growers can leave a lasting impression on the children - and be a rewarding experience for those involved.

“With 12,500 schools taking part there is bound to be one to be participating near you. We also have resources to help in the form of our Potatoes in School guide, which is full of useful hints and tips to presenting to children as well as a wealth of practical advice.”
