Price debate moves on to a new level

We definitely appear to have hit a nerve with some of our stories and comment pieces last week. In the days since the last issue of FPJ hit your desks, or you read the articles on freshinfo, a large number of fresh produce suppliers have contacted us to add their thoughts to the escalating debate on unsustainable prices.

There was no intention to start a bandwagon rolling; we were just doing what we do every week and reporting the opinions of the trade. But as you will see in this week's FPJ, and also on freshinfo, there is an undeniable momentum building up.

Judging by what I am hearing, retail buyers might, at last, be about to discover an industry prepared to come out of its corner and fight for what it is worth.

The situation we have reached has been a long time in the making, but something has to give. We are in for an interesting few months.

FPJ subscribers may have noticed a slightly louder thud than normal when this week's issue dropped on their desk or doormat this Friday morning. At 112 pages, it is the largest single issue Lockwood Press has ever produced in our 112 years servicing this industry. That it is so large is due, of course, to the upcoming Fruit Logistica, which creates more interest within the UK trade with each passing year.

It was fun compiling it and on freshinfo you are also able to access a hugely diverse range of topics, through our features and columns sections, as well as read another selection of the latest news.

For those of you decamping to Germany next week, hopefully we have given some more food for thought for your discussions in Berlin, and when you’re at the show, please come and see us in Hall 8.2, on stand A-01.
