A spokesman at Abbey Produce has told freshinfo Monday's blaze did not have any impact on potatoes or fresh produce.

The fire in fact broke out in a warehouse leased by medical supply company Brosch Direct from the Abbey Group.

Fourteen fire crews attended the fire at the site Abbey Produce shares with other companies in Fenland Cambridgeshire.

Firefighters were still keeping watch on the factory on Tuesday after tackling the fire for several hours on Monday before allowing it to burn out the following day.

Residents living nearby were asked to keep doors and windows closed, and witnesses said smoke could be seen miles from the site. The fire halted rail services between Ely and Peterborough.

The area’s roads were also closed off.

A number of factories share the site, which also houses a vegetable processing plant.
