Potato growers and merchants have been volunteering to promote healthy, balanced eating in their local doctor’s surgeries.

The promotion is organised by the British Potato Council and features a leaflet in the shape of a plate showing the recommended proportion of foodstuffs that make up a healthy, balanced diet. It also provides specific potato health facts. Around 400 farm shops around the UK have also asked for plates to give to their customers.

The plates have been produced by the BPC as part of its Fab not Fad campaign. "With the permission of doctors, the industry has been placing the healthy eating advice in waiting rooms for patients to read and take home with them," said BPC marketing manager Kathryn Race.

Some 80,000 consumers will also be given the healthy-eating advice by the BPC at agricultural shows and other venues this summer as part of the council’s drive to promote healthy eating.
