Potato stocks down 17.3 per cent

End January potato stocks in the UK were down 17.3 per cent on last year.

The British Potato Council’s latest estimate of calculated end-January stocks for all Home Crop Supplies of potatoes in Great Britain is 2.233 million tonnes. This is down 17.3 per cent from the 2002 crop but 5.8 per cent below three years ago.

Utilisatiopn down 12.8 per cent year-on-year

Crop Utilisation from harvest 2003 to end-January 2004 is estimated at 3.75mt. When compared to the previous year this is a decrease of 12.8 per cent during the same period, but a percentage point above the same period from the 2000 crop when total Home Crop Supplies were 6.09mt, a similar level to the current 2003 crop season.

Stocks:

End-January stocks are 17.8 per cent below the five-year (1998-2002) average of 2.7mt. Potatoes remaining in store at end-January as a percentage of GB Home Crop Supplies account for 37.3 per cent.

Utilisation:

Utilisation is 228,000t or 5.7 percent below the five-year average (1998-2002) of 3.97mt.
