The potato industry is very much alive and kicking despite rising costs and pressures.

This was the overwhelming feeling generated at Potato 2005, according to one of Europe’s leading potato supply companies, The Higgins Group.

The show held in Harrogate last month attracted more than 6,000 visitors during the two period.

Managing director David Higgins said: “Harrogate attracted many of the company’s old and new growers, customers and suppliers, and we welcomed the opportunity of re-establishing personal contact with them. Our visitors included not only our UK contacts. We saw visitors from mainland Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.”

Higgins said the show was timed well, occurring at a fairly quiet time for growers, but he had some criticisms about the location.

“Although Harrogate is a wonderful city it is a little far north for some, and perhaps a more central location would be preferable.

“Having said that, the show was very successful for us, and for most of the other exhibitors that I spoke to.”
