Early potato liftings have been disrupted by the dreadful weather of the last fortnight, said the British Potato Council.

While peak lifting has yet to get under way, some areas have already been hit.

Rob Burrow, BPC market information manager, said: “The weather has restricted lifting in many areas, but there are still adequate supplies coming onto the market.”

He said some areas in Lincolnshire, parts of the north west and Yorkshire have been harder hit, with some flooding in low lying fields.

“There have been cases of flooding and potatoes lying in water, and some incidences of rotting potatoes,” said Burrow. However, he said while problems are still fairly limited, the main issue will be if current weather conditions continue into September.

“The prospects for later on in the season are looking more hopeful,” he said.
