Will it be the King of Veg?

The Real Potato Co has launched an online election campaign to crown the potato King of Veg.

The campaign comes in time for the International Year of the Potato 2008, which aims to increase awareness of the potato’s importance as a food in developing nations.

Since its arrival in the UK, the potato has become a staple of the British diet, with people eating their way through a massive 1.6 million tonnes of fresh potatoes last year alone.

But the potato’s uses stretch far beyond the plate, according to The Real Potato Co; it can reportedly add shine to your silverware and remove rust from pots, and is even said to be good for the skin.

Members of the public can now show their love for the potato and support the King of Veg campaign at www.realpotato.co.uk by registering their vote. Potato lovers will also be given the chance to share tips and recipes and discover some additional quirky uses.

Jo Parish, sales and marketing director for The Real Potato Co, said: “As potato experts, potatoes are our number-one love. We believe they are one of the most versatile and delicious vegetables, and have amazing nutritional value. It was a real surprise to us to discover some of the weird and wonderful things potatoes are said to be useful for. That’s why we decided to launch the campaign, in recognition of the potato’s greatness and to give the public a chance to have their say on just how worthy the potato’s contribution to society actually is.”

The Real Potato Co has gained the support of the British Potato Council (BPC) for the campaign. Kathryn Race, marketing director for the BPC, said: “Potatoes are low in fat, contain no cholesterol and are packed full of vitamins and minerals. With so many different varieties in the shops, there is a potato to suit every taste and cooking requirement. We already know that potatoes are loved by the British people, and we urge everyone to show their support to get potatoes crowned the King of Veg."
