Following outbreaks of Potato Spindle Tuber Viroid, primarily in the Netherlands, it seems likely that new plant health controls will be introduced at an EU level. This follows findings of infected plants in other member states.

UK findings to date have included one infected batch of Solanum jasminoides and one of Brugmansia, imported from Belgium and Netherlands respectively.

It is possible that the controls will be voted on at the March meeting of the Standing Committee on Plant Health and introduced shortly afterwards.

Sources suggest that there will be a stipulation that plants for planting (including seed) of susceptible species (Brugmansia spp., Datura spp. and Solanum jasminoides) originate from a pest free area, or that the plants and seeds have been tested and found free of PSTV prior to movement.

It is also seems likely that plant passporting the material will be extended to include seed (all movements) and plants (movements to retailers) of susceptible species.

The HTA is advising growers and importers of susceptible species to keep up-to-date with any changed requirements by referring to the Defra plant health website.

They should also ensure that their suppliers are aware of any changed requirements to avoid consignments being refused entry to the UK.
