Poor Argentina weather pulls down apple and pear crop predictions

The World Apple and Pear Association has said due to climatic conditions in Argentina it is lowering its production predictions for the Southern Hemisphere.

The 2012 apple and pear Southern Hemisphere crops are expected to reach 5,457,000 million tonnes (mt) and 1,391,000 mt respectively.

For apples that means a three per cent fall on last year’s crop while export figures are set to fall 5 per cent to 1,644,666 mt.

For pears the decrease is of 10 per cent on the 2011 crop with exports slumping 15 per cent lower to 655,960 mt.

The data has been collected from industry groups in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, New Zealand, and South Africa.
