Israel has exported 1,000 tonnes of pomegranates this year, double the quantity it exported last year, according to Fruit Growers Association general manager Giora Sela.

The main markets are western Europe and the Scandinavian countries.

The success is attributable to growers' development of new varieties with long shelf life which have created a longer export period, said Sela. He especially commented on the pomegranate variety Wonderful, which now dominates new plantations of pomegranates throughout Israel. The total yield of the fruit in Israel amounts to 24,000 tonnes, and there are plans to further increase acreage as consumers realise the health benefits of this ancient fruit.
