Pom'Alliance to overcome difficult start

French potato producer Pom’Alliance expects to overcome a tricky start to the season across Europe.

Weather conditions have had a profound effect on the crop and reduced volumes, especially in Germany and the UK. Sector analysts are predicting a tougher time this year than last, despite the drop in quantities.

In France, weather also had its say with plantings going in late and having an impact on the crop. Overall tonnage should not be affected but quality could be as blight rears its head.

Pom’Alliance’s confidence stems largely from its crop-monitoring system, which is based on analysis at haulm stripping, lifting, culinary tests and final approval before tubers go into store. The system is well-established and capable of ensuring quality all season long, a spokesperson said.

Pom’Alliance tests 35-40 varieties a year and hopes to launch two new potatoes, Bleu d’Auvergne and Corne de Gate this season. These should make their first appearance on the UK market in the next few weeks as Pom’Alliance continues to build its relationship with Germicopa and Rush.
